{"id":104,"date":"2023-01-19T14:10:26","date_gmt":"2023-01-19T14:10:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.prienvironmental.com\/blog\/?p=104"},"modified":"2023-01-19T14:11:23","modified_gmt":"2023-01-19T14:11:23","slug":"trash-to-cash-turning-your-waste-into-a-revenue-stream","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.prienvironmental.com\/blog\/trash-to-cash-turning-your-waste-into-a-revenue-stream\/","title":{"rendered":"Trash to cash: Turning your waste into a revenue stream"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2>Waste not, want not: Food waste in Canada<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Food manufacturers know all too well that food loss during production is a financial and environmental liability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Food loss at the factory level can occur in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/environment-climate-change\/services\/managing-reducing-waste\/food-loss-waste\/taking-stock.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">several areas<\/a> such as quality control, production changes, and changes in supply and demand. It\u2019s estimated that nearly 60% \u2014 or 35.5. million tonnes \u2014 of food produced in Canada is lost and wasted each year. Of that, 32% is still edible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some degree of food waste is inevitable during manufacturing, but that waste doesn\u2019t all need to end up in landfill. With the circular economy gaining traction and ESG concerns at an all-time high, there are clever ways for manufacturers to capitalize on their waste streams \u2014 but they\u2019ll need to think a little differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou have to stop thinking of yourself as a company that creates a certain product and instead think about the resources you have and how you can use them to produce as much value as possible,\u201d says HBS assistant professor <a href=\"https:\/\/hbswk.hbs.edu\/item\/transforming-manufacturing-waste-into-profit\">Deishin Lee<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s time to pivot the way we think about waste. Food waste is no longer a manufacturer\u2019s trash: it\u2019s treasure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><a><\/a>Giving waste a second life<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are clear benefits to reducing and repurposing your company\u2019s food waste. Reducing food loss means better ESG scores \u2014 but it can also mean a better bottom line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many companies are unaware of the incentives available for waste reduction. For example, the Government of Canada has been offering financial incentives to companies that reduce their waste through their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/agriculture-agri-food\/news\/2022\/06\/minister-bibeau-announces-food-waste-reduction-challenge-finalists-for-the-business-models-streams.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Food Waste Reduction Challenge<\/a>. Finding ways to rethink the way your company handles and disposes of waste can lead to a new stream of revenue \u2014 one you might not previously have considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Food waste can be<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/nutritionsource\/sustainability\/food-waste\/#:~:text=Recycle%20food%20waste%20to%20feed,%2C%20bioenergy%2C%20and%20natural%20fertilizers.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> transformed<\/a> into all sorts of valuable materials, including compost, bioenergy, natural fertilizers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org.au\/curious\/earth-environment\/transforming-food-waste-making-something-out-rubbish#:~:text=Recycle%20food%20waste%3A%20composting,into%20compost%20and%20CO2.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new products<\/a>, pharmaceuticals, and even building materials. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org.au\/curious\/earth-environment\/transforming-food-waste-making-something-out-rubbish#:~:text=Recycle%20food%20waste%3A%20composting,into%20compost%20and%20CO2.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Some companies<\/a> even convert the methane that is produced from food waste and use it to power homes. Other forms of food waste can be converted into bioplastics (plastic produced from a renewable source) and repurposed as packaging, coatings, and adhesives. Material flows like these form the basis of the circular economy \u2014 an economic system where goods that would have otherwise been discarded are instead upcycled and reenter the chain to further production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PRI Environmental works with food manufacturers in Quebec and Ontario to reuse waste such as flour, baked goods, crackers, and cereals for conversion into nutritious, high-quality animal and pet foods.
